How an AI chip is made
From sand to AI chip in 6 steps
Every ChatGPT answer runs on a chip. That chip passes through about 5 countries before it works. In 15 minutes, you learn the 6 steps in order, so you can explain them to a friend.
- Chip
- A small flat piece of silicon that does the computer's thinking or holds its memory.
- Wafer
- A thin round disc of silicon, like a big shiny pizza. Hundreds of chips are made on one wafer.
- Fab
- A chip factory. Short for "fabrication plant".
01 · The question
Dinner with friends, one hard question
A friend reads the news on the phone. "Why does everyone talk about Taiwan and a Dutch company? Why can't the US just make its own AI chips?"
Everyone at the table looks at you. You use ChatGPT every day. But you do not know where its chips come from.
After this lesson, you can answer in one minute.
First, a quick guess.
02 · Your guess
How many companies make the machine that prints the smallest chips?
A wrong guess costs nothing. Guessing first helps you remember the answer. Pick one to open the next part of the lesson.
03 · The 6 steps
The chip's trip, from sand to your chat
Press Next step to see each step. Steps 1 to 4 build the chip. Step 5 packs chips together. Step 6 puts them to work.
04 · Remember
One chip depends on many countries.
No single country can make an AI chip alone. Each step needs a few companies, and some steps have only one.
If one of them stops, the whole line stops.
In the kitchen
Think of a croissant. Flour from one farm, butter from Normandy, an oven that only one company builds. Lose the oven, and no bakery makes croissants.
In the league
Picture one company that makes the official ball for every league in the world. Every team depends on it, even the rich ones.
Why can't the US just buy the machines?
- Money. One top fab costs $20 billion or more. The US gave $39 billion to help build chip factories. That pays for only about two top fabs.
- People and suppliers. Taiwan spent more than 30 years building skilled engineers and hundreds of nearby suppliers. You cannot buy that in a box.
- Trust. TSMC makes chips for others and never designs its own. So Apple and Nvidia send it their secret plans. It is like a kitchen that cooks for many chefs but never opens its own restaurant.
How did Taiwan get here?
In 1987, Morris Chang started TSMC with help from Taiwan's government. Later, many US companies stopped building factories. They kept the design work, because it made more money. The factories ended up in Taiwan. At the narrowest point, Taiwan is about 160 km (100 miles) from mainland China. That is why people worry about it.
05 · Two checks
Pass two checks to finish
A miss is fine. Each miss gives you a new case.
Check 1 of 2 · Which step is it?
Check 2 of 2 · Put the 6 steps in order
Tap the steps from first to last. If you tap the wrong one, you get a hint.
06 · Tell a friend
Your one-minute answer at dinner
Say it in your own words. Here is a version you can use:
The one-minute version
"A chip starts as sand. It becomes a thin silicon disc. A Dutch machine from ASML prints tiny patterns on it, layer after layer. Only ASML makes the machine for the smallest patterns. TSMC in Taiwan runs most of the factories that make the top AI chips. Then the chips are cut, stacked with memory and put in big computers. That is where ChatGPT runs. The US can buy the machines, but not the 30 years of people and suppliers around them."
| ASML | Netherlands. Makes the printing machines. |
| TSMC | Taiwan. Makes most of the top chips. |
| Nvidia | USA. Designs AI chips, then pays TSMC to make them. |
| Apple | USA. Designs phone and laptop chips. TSMC makes them. |
| Micron | USA. Makes memory chips. |
| SK Hynix | Korea. Makes memory chips. |

This lesson explains how the industry works. It is not advice to buy or sell any stock.
