End the day in one line

At the end of the day, one line to an AI writes what you did, what is open and your first step for tomorrow. Tomorrow starts in 1 minute. In 15 minutes, you learn how.

Handoff
A short note you leave for tomorrow's you.
Open item
A job that is not finished yet.
Next step
The first small action you take tomorrow.

01 · The question

Monday, 9 am, blank screen

You open the project you left on Friday. You stare at it.

Where did you stop? Which file? What was the plan? Twenty minutes go by before you do any real work.

You wish Friday's you had left a note.

What would help you restart fast? Make your guess below.

A made-up case. It happens to everyone.

02 · Your guess

What helps you restart fast?

A wrong guess costs nothing. Guessing first helps you remember the answer. Pick one to open the next part of the lesson.

03 · The 5 steps

Five steps from "I am done" to "I know where to start"

Press Next step to see each step. Steps 1 to 4 happen tonight. Step 5 happens tomorrow morning.

1Stop early

3Three parts

04 · Remember

Write the first step while you still know it.

At the end of the day, you know everything about your work. By morning, you know less. The note moves what you know from tonight to tomorrow.

The first step matters most. It is the door back in.

In the locker room

At halftime the coach gives 3 points: what worked, what did not, what we do first in the third quarter. He does not replay the whole game.

In a restaurant

The night cook leaves a note for the morning cook: what is ready, what is out, what to start first. The morning cook starts in one minute.

A good end-of-day note has 3 parts

  1. Done. 3 short lines about what changed.
  2. Open. What is not finished, and what you doubt. Name who holds it.
  3. Next step. One small action, with a name in it. 10 minutes or less.

Why only one first step?

A big task like "work on the website" is hard to start. A small step like "open pricing.html and fix the Buy button" needs no thinking. Starting is the hard part, so make it easy. My own end-day skill writes the Next step in every note for this reason.

05 · Two checks

Pass two checks to finish

A miss is fine. Each miss gives you a new case.

Check 1 of 2 · Pick the note that helps

06 · Tell a friend

Your one-minute answer

Say it in your own words. Here is a version you can use:

The one-minute version

"At the end of the day, I ask the AI to write three things: what I did, what is still open, and my first step for tomorrow. I save it in one file with the date. Next morning, I read that one note and do the first step. I do not plan. I start in about one minute."

My commandI type "end day". A script writes the note for each project.
WhereOne file per project per day, in a folder named _handoffs.
By itselfA timer also writes finished days I forgot.

Try it today · 5 minutes · safe

Tonight, before you close the laptop, paste your notes or today's chat into ChatGPT or Claude. Then send this:

Write my end-of-day note. Use three parts. Done: 3 short lines. Open: what is not finished, and anything I doubt. Next step: one small action I can start in 10 minutes or less, with the file or the person named. Use plain words. Keep it under 10 lines.

Save the note with today's date. Tomorrow, read it first.

Check: tomorrow, did you start working in one minute? Look at the real files too. The note is a summary, and a summary can be wrong.

Stuck? Ask the AI: "explain an end-of-day note like I am new".
