I sat down to learn some HTML on Codédex. I had the lesson open, some music playing and Claude nearby. That was the plan.
Then I found AgentPet.
It puts a little animated pet on your desktop. Mine started as a squirrel. I was looking at it, then at the small screen on my keyboard, and had an idea: could I put the pet there?
That was enough to take over the session.
I asked Claude to help. I wanted more than the clock and battery information that the keyboard normally showed. The idea kept growing. What if the lights could tell me when an agent was finished? What if I could keep the pet on the keyboard too?
I first had to understand what I was asking for. Uploading a GIF to the little screen was one thing. Making it react live to the agent was another. Claude suggested a cable and separate working and done images. I tried it, looked at the result, then changed what I wanted. I didn't suddenly understand everything happening in the code. At one point I said exactly that: I don't know coding, but this feels fun.
The first big win was getting a Rick and Morty GIF onto the little keyboard screen. I held it up to the camera because I wanted to see it working on the actual object. I hadn't planned any of this when I started recording.
Getting an image on the screen wasn't the end. The lights needed work. The keyboard behaved differently when I changed the connection. Later, when Claude stopped getting me further, I copied the conversation into Codex and carried on there.
That comparison was about this attempt, on this keyboard. What mattered to me was getting the next thing to work.
I got the GIF onto the keyboard and found a light effect I liked. Then changing the Bluetooth connection brought another problem back. I kept that test and the final display toggle in the video too. I was much more excited about that than I expected to be.
Shout out to Nguyễn Thành Đạt, the creator of AgentPet, and the community around it. The RickMorty Duo pet was submitted by 笼中 橘. through Petdex. The Acorn Squirrel pet was submitted by sushi-song through Petdex.
I still had an HTML lesson waiting for me.
