My keyboard's little screen now shows a Rick and Morty pet instead of the clock and battery. I got there with AgentPet, Claude, a cable and then Codex when Claude stalled. You'll see the GIF land on the screen, the lights flash when an agent finishes, and what happened once Bluetooth came back into the picture.
The keyboard idea
My keyboard has a small screen that showed the time and battery. I wanted something more fun on it.
I was supposed to be learning HTML on Codédex that session. AgentPet took over instead. I don't understand all the code, but seeing the keyboard change was awesome.
A GIF on the screen and a live pet are two different things. Getting the GIF on was one part. Making the lights and connections behave took more testing.
Claude, the cable and the pet
The pets came through Petdex. RickMorty Duo was submitted by 笼中 橘., and Acorn Squirrel was submitted by sushi-song.
- Start in Claude with the keyboard idea.
- Get the cable and make everything work over cable first.
- Get a GIF onto the keyboard screen.
- Pick the RickMorty Duo pet from the Petdex catalog.
Lights and the switch to Codex
The keyboard lights flash when the agent is done. With no agents running, the keyboard blinks red and Morty stays on the screen.
Claude stopped responding partway through, so I moved the whole chat to Codex. Codex got further in 7 minutes than Claude did in 16. I also tried connecting AgentPet with Codex.
The first light pattern looked ugly to me, so I kept fixing it until the effect looked right.
- Copy the whole Claude conversation about the keyboard.
- Open Codex and paste it in.
- Tell Codex that Claude lagged and stopped, and ask it to carry on.
Bluetooth and credits
Bluetooth brought another problem back. When I disconnected from Bluetooth, everything went back to how it was before.
